How to Hide Your Phone Number in Telegram

Как скрыть номер в Telegram: настройки и надёжный способ

You can hide your phone number in Telegram in three ways. The first is privacy settings, so strangers stop seeing your number. The second is a username: people can reach you without your number at all. However, neither method hides the number completely. The most reliable option is a private number for Telegram. Sign up with a separate number, and your personal SIM never shows up in the messenger.

Who sees your number by default

As a rule, your number is visible to your contacts, meaning people who have it saved in their phone book. On top of that, Telegram suggests you to people who added your number, even if you have never met. So your number leaks not only in chats but also through contact sync.

Strangers in groups usually can’t see your number. But if you never touched the settings, the picture depends on your account’s old values. So it’s worth checking them either way.

Method 1: privacy settings

The key setting lives in the Privacy and Security section. The path is almost the same on every device, so the steps are short.

iPhone: Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number.

Android: ☰ menu → Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number.

Desktop: Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number.

Under “Who can see my phone number”, choose “Nobody”. A second option then appears: “Who can find me by my number”. Set it to “My Contacts”, and strangers won’t find you by a number saved in their phone book.

By the way, the same section has exceptions. For example, you can let colleagues see your number and keep “Nobody” for everyone else.

Method 2: a username instead of a number

A username is a public address like @name. People can message you through it without knowing your number. So you don’t need to share your number with new contacts.

You can set it in your profile settings, in the Username field. However, a username doesn’t replace your number: the account is still tied to it. That said, you can change the address at any time if someone starts using it for spam.

Where your number still leaks

Privacy settings hide your number from strangers. But there are places where it still shows.

For example, people who already have your number saved always see it: Telegram simply matches entries in their phone book. Your number also sits in leaked databases from other services. If search by number is left open, anyone can easily identify you through such a database.

Finally, your mobile carrier knows your number, and so do the services where you entered it. So settings alone don’t give you full anonymity.

Method 3: a separate number for Telegram

The most reliable method is to register Telegram with a number that has no link to you. Then your personal SIM plays no part in the messenger. So there’s simply nowhere for it to leak from.

A virtual number works well for this. In classified ads it’s often just called a “virtual”. For example, anonymous numbers aren’t registered to a passport, and the code arrives in your dashboard. If you need the account for the long term, get a permanent number: you can always log back in with a code.

However, a disposable number is a poor choice for this task. It receives one code, so a repeat login on a new device won’t work. For more on the pitfalls, see our breakdown of free numbers.

Telegram also has its own option: anonymous +888 numbers from the Fragment platform. You buy them with TON cryptocurrency. However, SMS from other services don’t reach such a number, because it works only for Telegram.

How to move your account to another number

If your account already runs on your personal SIM, you don’t need to create it again. Telegram has a Change Number feature, and your chats, groups and contacts stay intact.

Here is the path: Settings → tap your number → “Change Number”. Then enter the new number and the code sent to it. As a result, the old number is unlinked from your account.

One thing matters: the new number must still receive SMS a month from now and a year from now. Otherwise the code simply won’t arrive at your next login. We cover this in detail in our guide to a missing code.

FAQ on hiding your phone number

Will the other person see my number if I message them first?

No, if your setting is “Nobody”. They will see your name and username, but not your number. However, if your number is saved in their phone book, Telegram will show it.

How do I hide my phone number in a Telegram group?

There’s no separate setting for groups, because the general one applies: “Who can see my phone number”. If it’s set to “Nobody”, group members won’t see your number. The exception is people who already have it saved.

Can I hide my number from people who already have it saved?

No, Telegram settings don’t erase someone else’s address book. If a person has your number saved, they will see it either way. So you can only hide your number from people who don’t have it.

Why limit search by number if my number is already hidden?

Because these are two different settings. A hidden number doesn’t show in your profile, but people can still find your account by it. So without the second restriction, anyone who has your number will find your profile.

Does a username hide my number?

No, a username only saves you from having to give out your number. The account itself is still tied to it. So it’s best to combine a username with privacy settings.

Can I sign up for Telegram with no number at all?

No, you always need a number: the login code is sent to it. But it doesn’t have to be your personal SIM. For example, a virtual number that isn’t registered to you will do.

Can switching to a virtual number get my account banned?

As a rule, no: changing your number is a standard feature of the messenger. Bans usually come for spam, not for the type of number. The main thing is to get a number for registration that passes the filters.

Will I keep my chats if I change my number in Telegram?

Yes, all chats, groups and contacts stay in place. Only the number your account is tied to changes. However, people who saved your old number may see Telegram swap in the new one in their contacts.

Does someone see my number if I send them my contact?

Yes, sending your contact reveals your number regardless of settings. The same happens if the “Share my phone number” box is checked when you add someone. So check that box every time.

What private number for Telegram keeps my personal SIM hidden long term?

One that stays yours for a long time: for example, a permanent number or a monthly rental. A disposable one won’t work, since it won’t receive a second code. As a result, you could lose the account the first time you log out.

A Telegram number not linked to you

Register Telegram with a separate number, and your personal SIM stays out of sight in the messenger. The code arrives in your dashboard.
